About Us

Incredible Edible Handbridge 🌱

We are local people living in the local area, enthusiastic about the environment and healthy living, and want to see our community thrive. In 2019 we started Incredible Edible Handbridge to transform a neglected urban space at Industry (former Boy’s Club), Overleigh Road, from a derelict patch of bare earth, bricks and pigeon poo into edible oasis aka community allotment providing veg, salad and herbs to our community.
We’ve learnt a lot since then, despite Lockdown interruptions, and are so excited to develop this project further.

The aim is turning unused areas into growing spaces, in order to provide fresh and healthy organic food for members of the community that is produced locally.
Growing food for ourselves rather than buying from a supermarket is healthier and reduces environmental impacts such as those surrounding plastic packaging, emissions from importing food from abroad and the destruction of habitat for agricultural land.
Also, turning our city greener works towards reducing carbon in the atmosphere, and increasing biodiversity in urban areas.
Through community farm sharing we also connect people of all ages with the food we eat and connect with each other as a community, combating issues such as loneliness, poor nutrition and obesity and mental health issues whilst raising awareness of sustainable food and empowering the community.

This is a short video (Ted Talk)  of one of the founders of the Incredible Edible Movement

Pam Warhurst speaking about how it all got started.

CURRENT & UPCOMING PROJECTS

Industry CoWorking Veg Plot

This is where it all started!
Located behind what was once the Boys Club but has now become a Coworking centre, we started with a neglected plot and with the addition of purpose made planters and developing a bare piece of ground at the rear of the building; it has started to become a productive vegetable garden for everyone to enjoy and benefit from.

Herb Planter

A planter with a variety of herbs is located outside St Marys Community Centre.

The are freely available for anyone help themselves

The Arches Wildlife & Wellbeing Garden

We want to create a wildlife and wellbeing garden, transforming an overgrown and unused green space into a social space with wildflowers, fruit trees and fruit bushes, and a seating area for relaxing.

Why its a Great Idea

General Environmental Benefits:

  • Increased local biodiversity
  • Attract pollinators to the area
  • Absorb carbon from the atmosphere
  • Improve air quality

Community Benefits:

  • Increased sense of community
  • Improve the look of the area and pride
  • Produce nutritious food for the community
  • Provide outdoor space for local people and families who don’t have their own

Educational Benefits for Wider Community:

  • Share gardening skills and knowledge
  • Teach the community about food growing techniques that don’t harm the environment
  • Offer volunteer opportunities
  • Provide fun education opportunities for children and schools

To make this happen we need your help.
